FACTS ABOUT HIV/AIDS

The HIV virus that causes AIDS was first discovered in 1983. Just over 20 years later UNAIDS estimates that close to 40 million people are infected by HIV. The same year WHO estimated that 3 million people died from AIDS and that 5 million new infections took place, during that year alone.

Southern Africa is the worst affected region in the world. The illness has taken millions of lives and leaves an ever growing poverty in its tracks.
